Pain on one side of the head and eye usually indicates migraines.

What is Migraine?

Migraine is unilateral (present on one side of the head) pulsatile headache that occurs due to dilation of blood vessels of the brain resulting in intense throbbing pain associated with nausea, vomiting, photophobia (fear of light), loose motions, sensitivity to smells.
Migraine can occur with visual disturbances or without visual disturbances.

  • Temporal arteritis –

    • The temple is the site on the head where the four skull bones meet.
    • It is a condition that occurs due to swelling of the blood vessels of the brain that supply blood to the scalp resulting in pain on the one side of the head and eye.

 

  • Trigeminal neuralgia

    • It is a condition that occurs due to compression of the vessels against the trigeminal nerve that also supplies the nerve of the eye (ophthalmic nerve) leading to pain on one side of the eye.

 

  • Occipital neuralgia

    • an occipital nerve that supplies the scalp region that gets inflamed or injured resulting in an intense throbbing headache. Pain occurs in the upper neck, back of the head, and behind the ears.

 

  • Excessive  use of Painkillers

    • Excessive use of painkillers like aspirin, ibuprofen, Tylenol result in headache

 

  • Other secondary causes include

    • Brain injury
    • Fatigue
    • Sinusitis (swelling of the tissue lining the spaces of the head called sinuses)
    • Allergic Reaction
    • Weakened Wall of  brain arteries
    • Tightness in the muscles of the neck and head (Neck Stiffness).
    • Cancer.

Tips to Manage and get relief from right-sided headache

  • Stay hydrated – Drink 3-4 liters of water every day.
  • Nap – It is an effective therapy for quick immediate relief from headaches.
  • Try different exercises that give you relief from stress and anxiety. Like Neck stretches.
  • Avoid excessive use of painkillers – painkillers trigger headaches.
  • Avoid bright lights, strong smells of food, loud noises, etc.
  • Avoid alcohol – Alcohol has some ingredients that cause inflammation in your body that can result in migraine. A person who experiences more than 2 attacks per month is prone to develop migraine even after taking a small amount of alcohol.
  • Avoid tight and pulling hairstyles – sometimes making high tight ponies and braids put pressure on the scalp that can trigger headaches.
  • Adopt the correct sitting pose – sitting or standing in a way such that your shoulders and head hanging down (eg. watching the phone) creates tension in your muscles. it is advised to correct your sitting pose. It can be improved by daily exercise and yoga.
  • Massage – Massaging the tightened muscles in the neck region using eucalyptus or lavender oil gives you quick relief from pain.
  • Applying ice – Applying cold compression of an ice bag or a cool washcloth across the forehead reduces swelling and pain.
  • Break while using screens -Take frequent breaks during screening time sessions including computers, television, laptops, tablets will give you some relief from headache and eye pain.
  • Other measures include
    • Use of antiglare glasses
    • Turn on the Reading mode on your smartphone
    • Adjust brightness to low
    • Maintain normal distance between eye and screen.

Headache with eye twitching means nothing but a complication of migraine.
Migraine sometimes leads to an involuntary spasm of eyelid muscles associated with the blinking of an eye.

There are two major types of migraine.

  1. Migraine with aura (classical migraine):
    • The eye is involved here: It occurs in 25 % of cases and is preceded by visual disturbances.
  2. Migraine without aura (common migraine)
